What does that one about “assumed housewife a skillfull cook” even mean? How would the poverty line be different if a man did the cooking instead of a woman? If whoever did the cooking regularly made gourmet meals, wouldn’t that cost more than if the family ate hot dogs or macaroni every meal? The only sense I can see in this statement at all is that perhaps they mean that the poverty line was set assuming that people would eat at home rather than eating at restaurants, or that they would avoid easy but expensive pre-packaged meals. In which case the issue is not the sexism implied here, but whether poor people are responsible enough to be economical.

No “sexism” to refer to a normal marriage, at a time when greedy govt didn’t force both spouses to work to survive. Too bad you missed it; it was a very good time.

I thought the definition of “sexism” was men acting like men, women acting like women, and the two working together harmoniously. I recall hearing a news story on NPR years ago that they introduced as “a sociologist identifies a serious social problem”. They then talked about a study that found that most women enjoy traditionally “housewife” tasks, like cooking, and see this as something they do to show their love for their families. I was waiting for them to get to the part that was a problem … but that was it! The researcher explained that if women are happy with traditional roles, they are less likely to “negotiate” with their husbands for different family roles. That is, it’s a big problem that women like being feminine because then they won’t get into vicious fights with their husbands.

Which means the sociologist and others in like fields would have fewer customers/patients and less fodder for writing thesis.
