Indonesia’s Mbah Gotho was an adult before Australia became a nation and has lived through 27 US presidents. The man, who Indonesian authorities claim to be a staggering 145 years old, was born to a world that bears little resemblance to ours. According to his identity card, Mr Gotho was born on December 31, 1870 – well before both World Wars.

When he entered the world in the same year as Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, the Franco-Prussian War was still going strong and Italy was still not a unified nation.

Gotho is from Sragen regency in the eastern parts of Central Java province in Indonesia. The world first came to know about him after a news report on Liputan 6. In an interview with the program, he said that though he could not remember his date of birth, he remembers the construction of a sugar factory built in Sragen in 1880.

He has outlived 10 of his siblings, four of his wives (last of whom died in 1988), and all his children. He now lives with his grandchildren, great children, and great grandchildren.

Mbah Gotho even bought his gravestone back in 1992 and his family prepared a grave site for him near his children’s graves. He says that his grandchildren are all independent now and what he wants is to die. He has been preparing for his death ever since he was 122, but death hasn’t knocked his door.

Mbah Gotho’s date of birth, though confirmed by the record office staff of Indonesia, for a longevity claim to be recognized by record authorities like Guinness World Records, the claim must be confirmed by independent parties.

The oldest confirmed person so far was a French woman named Jeanne Calment died at the age of 122 years and 164 days.
