The right way (and the wrong way) to lend money to family and friends – Get Rich Slowly

The right way to lend money to family and friends: Talk about it like a loan, but consider it a gift. Don’t expect to be paid back. Don’t give more than you’re willing to lose. Don’t charge interest. Decide if the money is worth a “cashout” of the relationship (like in Goodfellas). If so, bring up the money occasionally. Otherwise, don’t. Let the person know when the loan is made that you have a policy not to loan more money until the current loan is paid back.
