Chris Cuomo threatened to “ruin” a man and throw him down the stairs during a heated exchange after the man insulted the CNN anchor by calling him ‘Fredo’

The term comes from “The Godfather,” where it’s the nickname of Frederico Corleone, the least successful and weakest sibling in the mafia family.

[Fredo] is the second son of the mafia don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro). Fredo is the younger brother of Sonny (James Caan) and the elder brother to Michael (Al Pacino) and sister, Connie (Talia Shire). Corleone family consigliere Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) is his informally adopted brother.

Being weaker and less intelligent than his brothers, Fredo has little power or status within the Corleone crime family. The infant Fredo had pneumonia. In the novel, Fredo’s primary weakness is his womanizing, a habit he develops after moving to Las Vegas and which earns his father’s disfavor. In the films, Fredo’s feelings of personal inadequacy and his inability to act effectively on his own behalf are character flaws leading to greater consequences.

Cuomo, whose brother is New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, equated the reference to the N-word for black people.

“Only punk **s bitches from the right call me Fredo,” Cuomo said. “Fredo is from ‘The Godfather.’ He was a weak brother. And they use it as an Italian aspersion. Any of you Italian? It’s a f***ing insult to the people. … It’s like the N-word for us. So, is that a cool fucking thing?”

“You call me fucking Fredo,” Cuomo continued. “It’s like I call you punk bitch. You like that? … You called me Fredo. You know my name’s not Fredo.”

“What are you gonna to about it?” asked the man when Cuomo demanded that he “own” what he said.

“I’ll fucking ruin your shit,” said Cuomo. “I’ll fucking throw you down these stairs like a fucking punk.”

The confrontation eventually was broken up by others in the room.
