How does sodium pentothal a.k.a truth serum make people tell the truth?

It reduces brain functions and makes people more susceptible to pressure to tell the truth. It doesn’t force people to tell the truth so much as it makes them have less control over what they say & think. Similar to how you may be more talkative or honest when you’re drunk, since you have fewer inhibitions.

Remember the saying “the easiest version is the truth”? This is true in our brains as well. It’s harder for the brain to think of a lie than to tell the truth and it requires a higher level of function. It makes sense when you think about it: to tell the truth you have to remember something, to lie you have to remember that and think of something else.

Drugs like sodium thiopental lower higher cognitive function. This makes it harder to lie. An experienced interviewer can then more easily spot that you’re lying as it will become more obvious. Your lies won’t be as good and won’t be as easy to think of them. They can use that to figure out what you’ve said is true and what isn’t.

However if you never say anything, they can’t learn anything. Though if someone is breaking out the sodium thiopental, they’ve probably been using sleep deprivation and other fatigue techniques as well. Once you start talking, it becomes very hard to lie accurately while under the influence.

What the big deal is with “Han shot first”

The fact that Han shot first in his confrontation becomes a very telling part of his character. He was rogue – he played by his own rules and didn’t give a damn about the notion of a fair fight or honour. That short little scene sets his character as a man who is purely self-interested.

By digitally adding Greedo firing the first shot, the whole scene changes from ‘Han taking a cheap shot to kill the guy’ to ‘Han defending himself from an alien with horrible aim’. It was a cheap attempt to make Han Solo seem more ‘heroic’ when that is not who he is.

Plus, it just makes the whole scene look like crap.

What do all these buttons actually do?

That’s a mixing board in a recording studio. It’s a pretty large one. Fundamentally, it’s the same as a smaller version. Each strip down the board controls a single audio input – you’ve got an equalizer to tweak the frequency of the sound, a volume fader to control how loud it is & probably another knob to set your left/right position of the audio. There’s a few more advanced things like effects sends and what not but they’re just complications.

These things look more intense than they are.  Each channel has a collection of nobs that can have different effects on the sound. From the channels, the sound goes to one or more outputs, after the channel controls have mixed them all nicely together. The outputs would generally be the sound(s) that goes into the computer where they can edit even more. Before computers, being good on the mix board was more important than it is now. You needed to get it right the first time with the full band. It was a much more intense process.

A pro would want such a huge number of channels because they might want to hook up an instrument, like a piano, to a few microphones so they have more control over the sound. If they want more sound from the left side of the piano (or add an effect or whatever), they have that control.

18 Scams Everyone Should Be Aware Of

December 8, 2015 | 7 Comments » | Topics: Answers, TRUTH |

1. eBay scammers.

When you sell something like an iPhone, computer tablet, etc. (anything worth a pretty penny), you will occasionally get a really high bid at the end of your auction. You’ll then receive a follow up email that appears to be a payment confirmation from eBay/PayPal.

Never accept a payment email at face value. Always log into your PayPal account to verify you have received payment. What is happening is a scammer has created a new eBay account, usually only a couple of weeks old with little to no buying or selling history, and is placing high bids on valuable items. After they win, they immediately spend a fake payment email that looks legit (and is sometimes even more than the winning bid), but is carefully worded to say, "Payment will appear in your PayPal account after shipping tracking information has been confirmed." They are hoping that people will see the fake payment email and will ship their valuables unquestioningly. Do not send anything until you have logged into your account and can confirm the money has indeed been transferred.

These types of scammers will often request you send your items very quickly (birthday present, anniversary gift, etc.) to a different address from the one listed on their eBay account page. This is known as a Proxy Address. A proxy address is used by scammers who don’t want to be traced directly; they will hire someone to accept packages and then redirect it to them after receiving them. Often times, the proxy shipper has no idea who his/her clients are or what he/she is sending.

If this happens to you on eBay, report the user and repost the listing immediately. Make sure to also contact eBay so that they do not charge you a listing fee twice for the failed auction.

Why don’t animals attempt suicide?

Dolphins have been documented killing themselves on many occasions. Unlike humans, dolphins have to consciously take every breath. As a human, if you try to hold your breath, there’s an instinctive reaction that will eventually force you to breath. Dolphins don’t have this. They’ll swim down and just slowly nod off as their brain loses oxygen. The man who made the series Flipper is on record saying that one of the dolphins used on the show swam into his arms, looked him in the eyes, and then stopped breathing and died there. It caused him to rethink everything he did and made making Flipper one of his biggest life regrets. He went on to make a documentary called The Cove. It’s about an annual dolphin slaughter in Japan.

Also from Psychology Today: Chinese media has reported that a captive bear on a Chinese bear farm killed her son and then herself after she heard him cry out in pain when a catheter was jammed into his abdomen so that bile could be extracted from his gallbladder for human medicinal purposes. Around 14,000 bears are kept in horrific conditions and routinely tortured on Chinese bear farms. In this case “a mother bear reportedly broke free after hearing her cub’s cry, causing ‘farmers’ to run away in fear. She then ran to the cub’s side and immediately smothered it, then ran headlong into a wall and killed herself instantly

Everyone loved Ronda Rousey before she lost a fight and now everyone seems to have hated her all along, why is this?

It is easy to like a dominant fighter, and Ronda Rousey used her Olympic level judo to beat all of her opponents to great effect. The statistics speak for themselves. She won her first three amateur fights by armbar in the first round. Then she proceeded to win her first seven professional fights in the exact same fashion; an armbar in the first round. I haven’t checked, but I’m 99.99% sure that no other fighter has dominated in such a way (same technique, same round).

Then she fought Miesha Tate for the second time, who managed to make it to the third round with Ronda, but still lost by armbar. Her next four fights she won in the first round with a variety of finishes (KO (punches), another armbar, KO (punch), and a knee to the body).

She was always a rather fierce character, as you might expect from an elite fighter. She didn’t mince words, she was outspoken, brash, etc. And all this time, she was really paving the way for women in MMA. She was a big draw. I for one, as a former judoka, loved seeing such high level judo in MMA. It was awesome to watch.

Now to the casual observer, this is amazing to watch and read about. A fighter, dominating in such a way, with 75% of her victories with an armbar and 92% of them in the first round. That kind of prowess attracts attention in any sport.

And thus a hype machine was born. The UFC promoted her more than almost any other fighter at the time. Due to being paid proportionally to how much money she brought in to the UFC (revenue at the gate and in PPV buys), she was the highest paid fighter in the UFC. She was a Big Deal.

But to the more hardcore fans, there were aspects that went largely unnoticed. Chief amongst them: her division (bantamweight) was weak. The combined record of her opponents at one point was something like 1-7. Most champions will fight fighters coming off a winning streak, with mostly wins on their record. But there simply weren’t (and still aren’t) many female mixed martial artists at a high level at the time. Rousey was an Olympian, with a strong work ethic and a desire to win, and she climbed to the top, but arguably it was a relatively shallow climb.

11 Signs That Your Girlfriend Might Be Cheating On You

November 10, 2015 | No Comments » | Topics: Answers, Dating |

Remember when you were young and you thought love was this invincible, bulletproof force that was immune to outside influence, impervious to evil and capable of overcoming all obstacles? And, then you found out your girlfriend was sleeping with your best friend since a week after you met, and that bubble was ruptured, never to be restored again.

Sorry. Maybe we got a little personal on that one. Maybe, you’re one of the lucky few who remains a fool for love, and the wool has yet to wear away before your eyes. We hate to single-handedly destroy your remaining naivete, but women do cheat. Thankfully, more often than not, these kind of things don’t often happen without some sort of warning. Or in some cases, many. Here are intimations of infidelity that should tentatively raise flags:

Your Intuition

Your gut feeling may also be an indicator that something is wrong somewhere. If you have worked on overcoming your jealousy but still feel something is not right and have that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach or you find yourself looking for excuses for your partner’s behaviour-then pay close attention to other things on these signs of cheating spouse for a recurring pattern. Pay close attention to the signs and your instinct but make sure you don’t confuse signs with proof.

She Starts Paying More Attention to Her Appearence

If you girl suddenly starts taking more time with her hair and make up and dressing up without any special occassion then she could be trying to impress whomever she is cheating with. Pay attention especially to her underwear selection since most girls like to wear sexy undergarment when they are with someone new. If she wears granny panties when she is around you but puts on a lace thong to head to work then this could be a sign she is seeing someone.

How/why are college sports so big in America?

American football was made popular by colleges and universities, then the pro leagues formed, not the other way around. The colleges and universities spent many years and lots of money creating the market for American football. The pro leagues were formed to try to capitalize on that market. In fact, a popular anecdote is when the pro leagues were still in a fledgeling state, a college star named Jim Thorpe mentioned he was thinking of going pro, most thought he was kidding as the pro leagues were considered a joke. By the time the NFL became the powerhouse it is today, the college scene was a well entrenched participant.
