Huge congrats to Clinton Terry, a blind grapper from New Zealand for winning silver in his division at this year’s Pan-Ams. A few people in this Reddit post who trained with Clinton commeneted to give you some insight on how he trains and how he competes.
He does not start this way. I’ve watched him roll and rolled with him recently – no grips, no nothing. He shoots a lot of low singles and creates a long sweeping motion with his arm to catch something. Once he does, his grip, control, and pressure are incredible. Super happy for him.
I train with Clinton a lot. He’s a good dude and a great grappler. I’d never considered how good BJJ is for the blind until I met him, but his blindness doesn’t seem to affect his grappling at all… evidently, as he just won silver at the Pan Ams.
I am the guy in the white in the pic. He’s finally achieved his goal of winning a medal in a major comp in the USA (worlds, pans) after a couple of trips over here. He dominated his matches until the final conceding no points, passing everyone and taking the back. Lost the final by sweep. We traveled from new Zealand and have been training at brea Jiu Jitsu with dan lukehart and the cicero Costha team.
Here’s a video of Clinton competeting in a no-gi tournament:
