Hunter McGrady Is an American plus-sized model and body-positive activist who was featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition in 2017, 2018 and 2019
She was born on May 4, 1993 in Westlake Village, CA and is the middle of three children
Her father Michael McGray is an actor and is best known as Frank Barnes on Showtime’s Ray Donovan.
Her mother Brynja McGrady is a former model and actress.
Her older sister, Michaela McGrady, is also a model and body-positive activist.
Hunter began her modeling career at the age of 16 and tried desperately to lose weight to get modeling jobs. She was 114-lb and size 2 but it still wasn’t enough.
In an Instagram post from 2014, she reminisce about how 4 modeling agencies told her she need to be a size 00 to be a model:
At age 15 I was told by 4 agencies that I needed to lose 3 inches off of my hips to be a model which would have put me at a size 00. I would desperately work out for hours and eat few calories per day, HOPING I could fit the bill. It wasn’t until 18 years old, 3 years of insecurities brought on because I thought I wasn’t good enough, that I wouldn’t measure up! I realized that my body was not built to be that thin.
She also revealed in an interview with People Magazine that:
“My hips were always the bigger part of my body, and I was already so thin that I couldn’t keep shaving them down. I physically could not. And everyone was telling me that I could. At that time I thought my dreams of becoming a model were crushed.”
After years of trying to desperately fit her 5"11 frame into the ‘ideal model body’, Hunter finally accepted her naturally curvy body and signed with Wilhelmina Models, who were looking for plus-sized models and signed her on the spot. And on
She landed jobs with Lucky Brand, Bare Necessities, Lane Bryant and more. And in 2017 she landed her dream gig of appearing in The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition following in the footsteps of fellow plus-sized model Ashley Graham.
After the Sports Illustrated was released, Hunter reflected that it was a victory for the body-positive movement:
“Women, for anyone who has ever felt uncomfortable or insecure because of rolls, or stretch marks, or cellulite, or acne, or felt like you didn’t measure up because you weren’t represented in the magazines – THIS IS FOR YOU! You are beautiful. You are STRONG.”
When talking about her body now, Hunter reveals:
“I love my body now. I love everything about it. I’ve been an 18, I’ve been a 10/12, and I’ve been everything in between. Right now I sit at a 14/16, and I love it, because this is my God-given body.”
She met her husband Brian Keys on Snapchat and they dated for a year and a half before getting married in 2019.
“I was in New York and he said, ‘Hey do you want to get some dinner? I’m so and so,’” she continued. “I said, ‘Add me on Facebook.’ I didn’t know who he was, and I wanted to see what he looks like. So, he added me on Facebook, and our first date was three days.
