A Memphis divorcé who left his wife a year ago broke into a dance at a Bank of America branch last week after paying the last of his alimony payments.
Ed Smith told the Daily News he was with his wife for about 12 years and the couple had no children. His wife was not working when they divorced so he reached an agreement to pay her $825 a month in alimony for a year.
The insurance agent and musician said he works about 60 hours a week and it was a “real struggle” for him to be able to write the monthly checks.
“I was so happy to make that last payment,” he said. “$800! That’s some peoples’ house note right there.”
In addition to the alimony payment he also is paying his ex-wife’s utilities, phone and cable for another month and her car and insurance, about $500, for another year.
Smith said he plans to celebrate again when it’s finally all over.
“I’ll be doing another break dance,” he said.
