What started as a dream and a business of selling jewelry out of the back of his car, Matt Stuller made into what many consider to be the “Amazon” of the jewelry world.
With a business that provides overnight shipping straight from the source to over 50,000 exclusive retailers, Stuller has created quite the name and fortune for himself.
But how did a teenage boy sweeping floors at a jewelry shop become the most influential and successful jewelry manufacturing in America? Read on to learn more about Matt Stuller and his hard work, dedication to his customers, and his dream.
How did he get started?
While he was born in 1951, his journey into the jewelry industry didn’t begin until the 1960s, when he wanted to purchase his high school sweetheart a ring.
He did not have enough money to cover it, so the shop owner allowed him to work around the jewelry store to help pay down his bill. Between sweeping floors and shining the cases, Stuller began to watch the jewelry maker work.
He became intrigued with the process of jewelry making and sales. He also paid close attention to what the customers wanted and liked. He also was able to see the shortcomings and where the store and the salesman could improve.
At 19, Stuller took everything he had learned and began setting his own jewelry at his dad’s orthodontist office. His parents were not totally on board with the idea of him becoming a jewelry salesman, but he loaded up his car and set off to every jewelry store in Louisiana to sell his creations.
His charm and trustworthiness won over many businesses and he became like family to them. Since he would be working out of his car, many businesses would let him keep the jewelry in their safes at night. He would also be a frequent dinner guest at many clients’ houses.
Stuller was always looking for ways to wow his clients. He wanted them all to feel special. Soon, his reputation for excellence spread and his long term clients helped pave the way for a hardworking man to continue what he did best.
Stuller was always known to deliver!
Once he became an integral part of these businesses, he gathered his footing and put down roots. In 1970, the Stuller headquarters opened in Lafayette, Louisiana.
50 years later, Stuller is the largest jewelry supplier in the United States. They have over 1,000 employees and $410 million in sales in 2020!
