If you spend enough time in certain corners of TikTok, YouTube, or Reddit, eventually you’ll encounter a man filming himself from a rooftop bar in Bangkok explaining that he has finally figured out women.
The revelation usually occurred approximately six days after landing.
Welcome to the world of the passport bro.
A passport bro is generally a Western man who travels or moves abroad partly—or primarily—to improve his dating prospects. Thailand, the Philippines, Colombia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and parts of Eastern Europe are popular destinations.
But there are really two types of passport bros.
The first is pretty straightforward. He’s frustrated with dating at home, travels somewhere else, discovers he prefers the culture and dating scene, meets someone, and maybe builds a life there.
Nothing particularly controversial about that.
Then there’s the second type.
This is the passport bro who doesn’t merely enjoy dating overseas. He needs everyone to know that he has escaped Western women.
American women are entitled. Feminism ruined them. They’re too masculine. Their standards are unrealistic. They don’t appreciate men anymore.
Meanwhile, women in Thailand, Colombia, or the Philippines are supposedly feminine, traditional, loyal, submissive, and thrilled to meet a 41-year-old American middle manager named Kevin.
Kevin has cracked the code.
Why Passport Bros Exist
To be fair, modern dating can genuinely suck.
Dating apps have transformed romance into a gigantic human vending machine where everyone can browse hundreds of potential partners while wondering whether someone slightly better is one swipe away.
Men complain about getting no matches. Women complain that their matches are terrible. Somehow everyone has thousands of options and nobody is happy.
For some men, going overseas dramatically changes the equation. A completely average American guy who struggles to get dates back home might arrive in Manila or Bangkok and suddenly receive considerably more attention.
Understandably, that can feel incredible.
But before concluding that American women simply failed to appreciate your devastating charisma, there’s another factor worth considering.
Money.
The Part About Money Nobody Likes Talking About
Passport bros frequently explain their newfound success by saying foreign women “appreciate men” or are “more traditional.”
Maybe.
But a man earning $70,000 a year may be completely ordinary in Los Angeles while appearing relatively wealthy in a country where average wages are dramatically lower.
His apartment gets nicer. His disposable income increases. His social status changes.
And, unsurprisingly, his dating options may improve too.
That doesn’t mean every woman dating a foreigner is chasing money. Plenty of international relationships are completely genuine.
But if you couldn’t get three Tinder matches a month in Phoenix and suddenly you’re Leonardo DiCaprio in Manila, perhaps don’t immediately conclude that the only variable that changed was women’s appreciation of masculinity.
The exchange rate may be putting in a shift.
The Western Woman Boogeyman
The strangest thing about the more extreme passport bros is how obsessed they remain with the women they supposedly escaped.
They’ll be sitting beside a gorgeous beach in Thailand, eating incredible food, dating beautiful women, and supposedly living their dream life…
…then spend four hours uploading videos about how terrible American women are.
At some point you have to wonder who’s actually having trouble moving on.
If paradise is really paradise, enjoy it. You don’t need to send your ex-girlfriend a quarterly shareholder report.
And that’s where passport bro culture can stop being about international dating and become something closer to a grievance movement with airline miles.
“Women Here Are Traditional”
Another favorite passport bro phrase is that women overseas are “traditional.”
It’s a wonderfully convenient word because it can mean almost anything.
Sometimes it means family-oriented. Sometimes it means interested in marriage.
And sometimes, if we’re being less charitable, it means: “I would like a woman who argues with me less.”
There’s also something ridiculous about describing millions of women as though they all downloaded the same personality.
“Filipinas are traditional.”
“Colombian women are feminine.”
“Thai women respect men.”
Some are traditional. Some are progressive. Some want children. Some don’t. Some want husbands. Some want careers.
Some will absolutely leave you on read.
It turns out foreign women possess the same annoying characteristic as Western women:
They’re individual human beings.
Geography Doesn’t Fix Your Personality
And this is where the more extreme passport bro philosophy runs into trouble.
Sometimes your dating environment really is the problem.
But sometimes you’re the problem.
Unfortunately, Spirit Airlines doesn’t offer a direct flight away from yourself.
If you’re bitter, controlling, insecure, dishonest, or incapable of maintaining a healthy relationship in America, those qualities don’t disappear when your plane lands in Bangkok.
For a while, novelty can hide them. Money can hide them. Cultural differences can hide them.
Eventually, though, you’re just another guy arguing with his girlfriend about whose turn it is to take out the trash.
So What’s Wrong With Being a Passport Bro?
Nothing, necessarily.
If you prefer dating abroad, date abroad. If you love another culture, move there. If you meet someone you genuinely connect with, fantastic.
The weirdness begins when finding happiness overseas somehow requires declaring half the human population back home defective.
There’s a big difference between saying, “I’m happier dating here” and saying, “Western women have been destroyed by feminism.”
One sounds like a man who found a lifestyle that suits him.
The other sounds like a man who moved 7,000 miles away and somehow brought his dating resentment as a carry-on.
So travel. Date. Fall in love. Build whatever life makes you happy.
Just remember: if nobody wanted to date you in America and suddenly you’re drowning in attention somewhere the average monthly salary is less than your car payment, maybe wait a little while before starting that podcast about how you’ve finally cracked the female mind.
