The Greatest Punk Documentary Ever Made

August 18, 2026

If you’ve never seen The Decline of Western Civilization, you don’t need to know anything about punk to get pulled into it.

Released in 1981 and directed by Penelope Spheeris, the documentary drops you into the Los Angeles punk scene at the end of the 1970s, when bands like Black Flag, X, the Germs, Circle Jerks, Fear, and Catholic Discipline were playing small clubs to crowds of kids who looked like they might either start a band or start a fight before the night was over.

What makes the movie great isn’t just the music. It’s how close Spheeris gets to everyone.

There’s almost no distance between you and the people on screen. You’re in tiny apartments, backstage, inside the clubs, talking to musicians and fans who have no idea that anyone will care about them forty years later. Nobody is explaining the importance of punk. Nobody knows they’re part of music history yet. They’re just living it.

And that makes the movie funny, uncomfortable, chaotic, sad, and incredibly alive.

It’s also a portrait of Los Angeles that barely exists anymore. Cheap rooms. Strange clubs. Kids with no money making their own culture because nothing around them felt like it belonged to them.

You can come for Black Flag and the Germs. But you don’t have to care about punk at all.

At its best, The Decline of Western Civilization is about what happens when a bunch of outsiders find each other and build their own world.

And Penelope Spheeris happened to be there with a camera.
