I’m currently seeing a woman about once or twice a week, and there’s something that’s starting to bother me. She never offers to pay for anything.
Whenever we go out and the bill comes, she just seems to expect me to cover it every single time. She doesn’t even make the gesture of offering to split the bill or pick up the check.
I’ve had girlfriends before and been on plenty of dates, and this is the first time I’ve experienced this. In my past relationships, women would usually offer to split the bill or even treat me occasionally.
I’m starting to wonder if this is a red flag. I don’t mind paying for dates, but the fact that she never even offers makes me feel like I’m being taken advantage of.
I’m seriously considering ending things because, at this point, I’m starting to feel used. Am I overreacting?
Yes, it’s a red flag. But maybe not for the reason you think.
The problem isn’t necessarily that she’s not paying. It’s that you’re starting to feel like the relationship is one sided, and that’s something you need to pay attention to.
Look, there’s nothing wrong with a man wanting to pay for dates. And there’s nothing wrong with a woman who prefers a more traditional dating arrangement. But those expectations need to be understood by both people.
What bothers you isn’t really the money. It’s the complete lack of consideration. You’d probably feel differently if she occasionally said, “Hey, dinner’s on me tonight,” or even just offered to buy you a coffee.
You want to feel like she’s interested in you, not just what you can provide.
But here’s where I’m going to challenge you.
Have you actually talked to her about this?
Because if you haven’t, you’re building resentment toward someone who might not even realize there’s a problem.
Maybe she grew up believing men should always pay. Maybe that’s how every relationship she’s been in has worked. Or maybe she really is taking advantage of your generosity.
You don’t know yet.
So before you walk away, have an adult conversation.
Tell her, “I enjoy spending time with you, but I’ve noticed I’m always the one paying when we go out. I’m looking for a relationship where we both contribute, and lately this has been bothering me.”
Then pay attention to her response.
If she listens, understands, and makes an effort, you’ve got something you can work with.
If she gets defensive, dismisses your feelings, or acts like you’re cheap for bringing it up, that tells you something important.
And remember, generosity isn’t just about money. Does she make an effort to see you? Does she plan anything? Does she show appreciation? Does she do thoughtful things for you?
If she’s contributing in other meaningful ways, that’s worth considering.
But if you’re paying for everything, planning everything, and doing all the work to keep the relationship going, then you’ve got a bigger problem than a dinner bill.
You don’t need a girlfriend who keeps score over every dollar. But you do need someone who cares about giving as much as she receives.
Have the conversation once. Watch what happens next. And if nothing changes, you’re allowed to walk away.
