“My wife expects me to be happy about her promotion while I’m struggling to find work”

insecure husband

My wife and I have been married for three years.

I was working as a web designer until recently, when several of my coworkers and I got laid off. I’ve been looking for another job for about a month, but so far, nothing. I’ve sent out plenty of resumes and haven’t gotten a single response. It’s been really discouraging, and I’m starting to feel hopeless.

My wife, on the other hand, works at a bank and recently got promoted to manager.

One day, she came home and started bragging about her promotion. Given everything I’m going through, I wasn’t exactly in the mood to celebrate. I didn’t get excited or make a big deal out of it. I just said, “Okay, good for you.”

She looked at me like I was crazy and asked, “Aren’t you happy? I don’t get any congratulations or anything?”

I told her, “It’s your win, not mine.”

She responded, “It’s not just my win. It’s our win. Wake up!”

That really pissed me off. I snapped and said, “It’s not my win! It’s yours. I get it! You got your fucking promotion. Good for you! What do you want me to say? You want me to act excited like this is something special? Why don’t you fuck off!”

She fired back, “What the hell is wrong with you?”

At that point, I just walked away.

I’m already in a terrible place mentally because of my unemployment, and the last thing I need is someone rubbing their success in my face.

I talked to my best friend about what happened, and he agreed with me. He thinks my wife is acting like she’s better than me now that she’s a manager, almost like she sees herself as superior.

I don’t think it’s fair for her to expect me to celebrate her success when I’m struggling just to get my own life back on track.

Am I wrong for reacting the way I did?

Dude, what the hell is wrong with you?

Your wife came home excited about a promotion she worked hard for, and you treated her like she’d personally attacked you.

I get it. Losing your job sucks. Getting ignored by employers is discouraging. But you’ve been unemployed for one month, and you’re acting like your wife is supposed to put her happiness on hold until you get your life together.

That’s ridiculous.

You keep saying she was rubbing her success in your face. How? Did she mock you for being unemployed? Did she call you a loser? Did she say she was better than you?

No. She wanted her husband to celebrate something good happening in her life.

And when she said, “It’s our win,” she was telling you that you’re a team. Instead of recognizing that, you told her to fuck off.

Your wife isn’t making you feel small. Your insecurity is. And you’re making her pay for it.

Then you ran to your best friend, who happily validated your resentment instead of telling you how badly you screwed up.

Here’s what you need to understand. Being unemployed doesn’t make you a bad husband. But punishing your wife for succeeding because you’re unhappy with yourself absolutely does.

You owe her a serious apology. No excuses. No blaming your circumstances. You acted like a jealous, insecure jerk, and she deserved better.

And you need to get something straight. Marriage isn’t a competition. Your wife’s success isn’t your failure.

Your wife shouldn’t have to make herself smaller just so you can feel bigger.

Ask yourself one question.

Do you actually want a successful, happy wife, or do you only want her to succeed as long as she’s not doing better than you?

Because right now, your behavior says a lot more about you than her promotion ever could.
