My son is five years old. A few days ago, we were shopping when we ran into one of my wife’s old friends from high school. They stopped to catch up, and during the conversation my wife mentioned that we have a son.
Her friend asked what his name was. My wife paused and did not answer, so I said his name.
Her friend looked surprised and said, “You mean like your ex boyfriend?”
Our son’s name is extremely uncommon. I have never met another person with it. The second I heard that, my stomach dropped.
Ever since then, my wife has refused to talk about it. I feel completely blindsided. Part of me feels betrayed, and another part feels disgusted. Something changed in that moment, and now I cannot look at her the same way.
Response:
You are not reacting to a name. You are reacting to secrecy.
If your wife had dated someone with the same unusual name and never told you, then froze when it came up in public, anyone would have questions. The silence is doing far more damage than whatever the truth actually is.
At the same time, do not let your imagination write the rest of the story. Right now you have one awkward comment and a wife who refuses to explain. That is not enough to know what really happened.
Tell her this is no longer about the name. It is about trust. Ask for an honest conversation and listen to her answer. If she continues refusing to talk, that becomes the bigger problem. A marriage cannot stay healthy when one person refuses to address something that has deeply hurt the other.
