I have an old dog in kidney failure too. Haven’t told her yet, she just keeps being happy.
I’m old too, and I’ve had animals my whole life, mostly cats and dogs in various multiples. Do the math and you can see I’ve been here before.
The way I reconcile it is pretty straightforward, and well in line with the overall Stoic approach to things. It always begins the same way- see things plainly for what they are, understand the natures of the things involved, and respond reasonably and virtuously to the reality around us.
Las Vegas Is Eating Itself
Las Vegas used to lie to you in a fun way.
It was a city built entirely on the agreement that both of you — you and it — were full of shit. You weren’t really going to win. It wasn’t really going to treat you fairly. But the mutual deception had style. There was theater to the transaction. You walked in knowing you’d probably lose, and Vegas handed you just enough illusion to make the loss feel worth it.
That agreement is gone. The illusion has been replaced with a spreadsheet, and the showgirls have been replaced with fees.

“My girlfriend says she doesn’t want to marry me because I don’t have a decent career”
I’ve been with my girlfriend since I was 18—we were high school sweethearts. I’m 27 now, and she’s 26. After high school, I started working right away and have mostly been in service jobs. Right now, I work at the UPS Store. She went the college route, studied accounting, and is now a senior associate at one of the Big Four firms. She earns a lot more than I do, which honestly doesn’t bother me. I’ve never cared much about money in the relationship.
But when I brought up the idea of marriage, she said she doesn’t want to get married until I “establish” myself professionally. The thing is, I don’t have big career ambitions—and I’m genuinely happy with the work I do.
So now I’m wondering: has our relationship run its course? Are we just too different at this point?
