The Backstories And History Of 10 Famous Paintings

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918): Death and Life, 1910, reworked in 1915, oil on canvas, Leopold Museum, Vienna

Gustav Klimt’s large painting ‘Death and Life’, created in 1910, features not a personal death but rather merely an allegorical Grim Reaper who gazes at “life” with a malicious grin.

This “life” is comprised of all generations: every age group is represented, from the baby to the grandmother, in this depiction of the never-ending circle of life.

Death may be able to swipe individuals from life, but life itself, humanity as a whole, will always elude his grasp. The circle of life likewise repeats itself in the diverse, wonderful, pastel-coloured circular ornaments which adorn life like a garland.

Gustav Klimt described this painting, which was honoured with a first prize at the 1911 International Art Exhibition in Rome, as his most important figurative work. Even so, he seems to suddenly no longer have been satisfied with this version in 1915, for he then began making changes to the painting—which had been framed for long by that time.

The background, reportedly once gold-coloured, was made grey, and both death and life were given further ornaments. Standing before the original and examining the left interior edge of Josef Hoffmann’s frame for the painting, one can still discern traces of the subsequent over-painting, which was done by Klimt himself.

How Do Police Know When A Suspect Is Lying?

police interrogation

Law enforcement can tell when suspects are lying, usually beginning with an initial 911 call or first interview.

“The 911 call and initial statements are among the most important pieces of evidence should a case go to trial,” said Stacy Dittrich, a former Ohio police detective, crime expert and author. “The entire case can build from those few sentences.”

Here are the most tell-tale signs, revealed.

22 Years Old and Already Burnt Out…

Every single goddamn day is just the same thing. Wake up early, battle through rush hour traffic, sit at work rotting away behind a desk for 8 hours, killing your eyes staring at a screen until they’re in pain and sore, then battle through rush hour traffic again to get home. I feel bad even asking for a single day off, so I have to keep working. All I ever do is work. One single day off for a holiday and then it’s back to work. My entire day is gone. The weather is so beautiful nowadays and I can’t even be outside to enjoy it. The best part of my day and the best years of my life are being sucked away from me before my eyes.

I’m only 22. I’ll never be this young or have this much energy again. I’ll never be in such good health again. And I have to waste it all away stuck behind this desk in this shitty 5 day in a row 40 hour work week. Did I mention I’m also taking classes at the same time. 4 days a week I have to go to class for 3 hours right after work and I have another class on Saturday morning. So there goes the rest of my free time. The weekend is way too short and doesn’t even feel like a weekend.

I’m supposed to be enjoying my life. I’m supposed to be making memories to look back on when I’m old and weak and dying. Instead I’m wasting everything away working myself to death and killing myself with these goddamn classes. I haven’t had a break for months. I never get to do anything fun anymore. I’m completely isolated and alone here. I have no friends in this shitty city. All of my college friends forgot about me even though I only graduated 10 months ago. I have no time for fun and no time for anything. What the fuck is the point of this life? I can’t even remember the last time I was happy. It’s just work work work work study study study study day after day after day after day, no break ever. I’m so fucking sick and tired of it. I’ve bought a rope and I’m just waiting for the day I can take this all away. I’m so fucking tired. I’m so fucking done.

Bad Financial Decision Making of the Day

Okay so I know it sounds crazy but basically I’ve had six cars this year since May for a number of reasons and now have about 20-22k in negative equity.

I am now in a 2023 BMW X3 with a ridiculous car payment. My financial situation has since changed since buying this car as I am now the primary caregiver of a loved one.

I want to substantially lower my car monthly payments (like by $400) so I’m thinking about getting a $26k CPO Toyota Camry.

I have pre approval through Navy Fed who I hear is known to exceed the usual LTV rate of 125%. I’m think it would make sense to switch to a car that is more reliable, significantly less to maintain although I’ll be paying way more than it’s worth versus staying in this very expensive ($73k) car.

JFK’s Harvard Application Essay

The reasons that I have for wishing to go to Harvard are several. I feel that Harvard can give me a better background and a better liberal education than any other university. I have always wanted to go there, as I have felt that it is not just another college, but is a university with something definite to offer. Then too, I would like to go to the same college as my father. To be a “Harvard man” is an enviable distinction, and one that I sincerely hope I shall attain.
