My husband of one year admits he purposely tries to “keep me humble.”
Those were his exact words. He refuses to compliment me or build me up in any way, because he’s convinced that if he does, I’ll somehow become arrogant or delusional about myself.
What really set me off happened earlier today. I was in the middle of changing clothes when he looked at me and said I looked “very unappetizing.” He even compared me to food that looks gross but tastes okay. I still don’t know what that was even supposed to mean — and honestly, I don’t think there’s a way to make that sound respectful.

My husband gives me the silent treatment whenever we have a conflict. It doesn’t matter if he’s mad at me or if I’m upset about something—his go-to reaction is to shut down and ignore me.
We’ve been together for 13 years, and this has been his pattern from the start. After four or five days of silence, I usually end up begging him to talk to me. Most of the time, the only thing that gets him to engage is when I say I’m done and can’t take it anymore. Then suddenly, he’ll talk.
Last year, we separated for five months. I told him I couldn’t live like this anymore. When we got back together, things seemed better. At first, during conflict, he’d go quiet for a couple of hours—but he’d eventually come talk to me. Now we’re back to square one. It’s day four of silence again, and I don’t know what to do.

Let’s just get one thing straight: fighting in a relationship isn’t a sign of failure. It’s a sign you’re two human beings with different brains, different baggage, and different expectations trying to do life together without killing each other. So if you’re expecting some Disney-fied, conflict-free, unicorn fart version of love—grow up.
