The kinder you are, the weaker you appear in the eyes of others. And honestly, I think they’re right.

Under capitalism, looking out for yourself comes before everything else. The people we admire most are the ones who put their own happiness, wealth, and success first and actually achieved it. Celebrities, billionaires, athletes. These are our heroes because they went after what they wanted and got it.

I’ve never been formally diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder, and frankly, I’m not sure I’d want that diagnosis on my record. But two psychologists, including my current therapist, have described me as narcissistic. I’m also a psychology student, and the more I learn about the subject, the harder it becomes to deny that they’re probably right.

The strange thing is that I don’t walk around feeling superior to everyone all the time.

I’m 18 years old, and I’m planning to marry my best friend.

She’s 19, she’s a lesbian, and I’m aromantic, which means I don’t experience romantic attraction. Neither of us is in love with the other. We don’t plan on having a traditional romantic relationship, and we probably won’t ever have sex.

But we’re seriously considering getting married anyway.
