ww1 trench raider

World War 1 Trench Raider

During World War I, trench raiding emerged as a tactic in trench warfare. It involved small-scale surprise attacks on enemy positions under the cover of night.

Typically, raiding parties consisted of small teams of soldiers who would darken their faces with burnt cork before navigating through the barbed wire and debris of no man’s land to infiltrate enemy trench systems. The distance between friendly and enemy front lines varied, but was generally several hundred meters. Daylight raids were futile as enemy machine gunners and snipers had clear visibility of no man’s land and could easily target anyone revealing themselves above the trench parapet.

A farmer and his two sons during a dust storm in Cimarron County, Oklahoma, April 1936.

Men stood by their fences and looked at the ruined corn, drying fast now, only a little green showing through the film of dust. The men were silent and they did not move often. And the women came out of the houses to stand beside their men—to feel whether this time the men would break. The women studied the men’s faces secretly, for the corn could go, as long as something else remained. The children stood near by, drawing figures in the dust with bare toes, and the children sent exploring senses out to see whether men and women would break. The children peeked at the faces of the men and women, and then drew careful lines in the dust with their toes.

Robert De Niro (48 Years Old) and Martin Scorsese on the Set of Cape Fear 1991

To prepare for the role, six months before shooting began De Niro and his longtime trainer began hitting the gym six days a week, for two to three hours per day. Once filming started, he worked out for five hours a night. De Niro suggested that Scorsese hold off on shooting any scenes that showed off the actor’s muscles until the very end of production, so that he could be as fit as possible, and the director agreed.

De Niro also reportedly paid a dentist $5000 to grind down his teeth, then another $20,000 after filming wrapped to have them fixed.

bandits roost

Bandit’s Roost, at 59½ Mulberry Street (Mulberry Bend), was the most crime-ridden, dangerous part of all New York City.

The investigative journalist and self-taught photographer, Jacob August Riis, used the newly-invented flashgun to illuminate the darkest corners in and around Mulberry Street, one of the worst slums in Manhattan.

His images, which highlighted the plight of poor immigrants in the area, were published in his landmark work; How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York

feet of ballerina dancer

The Feet of a Female Ballet Dancer

As a dancer, I think that ballerinas have beautiful feet. However, to a non-dancer, all that is seen is a distorted and unnatural-looking foot.

In some ways they are ugly because of the extreme of work they do. The unnatural pointe work also takes its toll- not only on the skin, with blisters and wounds, but also with the bones, with stress fractures and bone spurs.

The official portrait of the crew of Artemis II, the first humans set to visit the Moon in over 50 years.

In a historic move, NASA has announced its first crew of astronauts set to embark on a lunar mission in over fifty years.

Since the conclusion of the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, human space exploration has been limited to distances of only a few hundred miles from Earth. However, with the upcoming Artemis mission, NASA is poised to once again land humans on the moon, with hopes of eventually paving the way to a Mars mission.

The scientific community is eagerly anticipating the discoveries that may arise from this mission, as the moon’s surface is expected to offer valuable insights into the formation of our solar system.

They are Reid Wiseman, the mission’s commander; Victor Glover, the pilot; Christina Koch, mission specialist; and, Jeremy Hansen, also a mission specialist. The first three are NASA astronauts, while Mr. Hansen is a member of the Canadian Space Agency.

The Ascension of Christ, painting by Salvador Dali, 1958

Dali said that his inspiration for The Ascension of Christ came from a “cosmic dream’ that he had in 1950, some eight years before the painting was completed. In the dream, which was in vivid color, he saw the nucleus of an atom, which we see in the background of the painting; Dali later realized that this nucleus was the true representation of the unifying spirit of Christ.

The feet of Christ points out at the viewer, drawing the eye inwards along his body to the center of the atom behind him. The atom has the same interior structure as the head of a sunflower. As with most of Dali’s other paintings of Christ, his face is not visible. Above the Christ is Gala, her eyes wet with tears.

Takijiro Ōnishi seppeku

After WW2 the Japanese Admiral who invented the idea of kamikaze pilots committed ritual suicide, seppuku, as an apology. After cutting through his abdomen he refused the customary beheading, instead slowly dying over several hours

Takijirō Ōnishi committed ritual suicide (seppuku) in his quarters on 16 August 1945, following the unconditional surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. His suicide note apologized to the approximately 4,000 pilots whom he had sent to their deaths, and urged all young civilians who had survived the war to work towards rebuilding Japan and peace among nations. He also stated that he would offer his death as a penance to the kamikaze pilots and their families. Accordingly, he did not use a kaishakunin (a second who executes him by beheading), and died of self-inflicted injuries over a period of 15 hours.
