“My girlfriend is lazy, should I break up with her?”

I’m a 26 year old guy, and I’ve been dating my girlfriend, who is 24, for about two and a half years. Things have been great between us for the most part, but there’s one big problem. She really wants to get married, and while I’m open to the idea, I’m terrified that marrying her will drag me into debt and depression.

When I met my girlfriend, she wasn’t working, and two and a half years later, she still isn’t. We live together, and I pay for absolutely everything. Rent, dates, her car payment, my car payment, her phone bill, clothes, and pretty much anything else she needs. I’ve tried helping her find a job, but she just doesn’t seem interested.

There’s a sentence that has probably cost people more money than any financial scam ever invented.

“I work hard, so I deserve this.”

It sounds reasonable. You put in your hours, deal with your boss, sit in traffic, and sacrifice a good portion of your life to earn a paycheck. Surely you should get to enjoy some of it.

And you should.

But somewhere along the way, we confused enjoying our money with spending nearly all of it.
