The 1998 TV Show That Turned Slavery Into a Sitcom

There are bad television ideas.
There are catastrophically bad television ideas.
And then there is The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer, which somehow looked at slavery-era America and thought:
“You know what this needs? Laugh track.”
Not metaphorical laugh-track energy.
An actual laugh track.
And the craziest part is not that the show existed.

“My boyfriend lied to me about running a marathon”

A few weeks ago, my boyfriend claimed he completed a full marathon in an impressive time, under four hours. Since we started dating six months ago, this marathon had been a huge topic between us. I watched him train, helped him fundraise, and supported him emotionally the entire way.
On race day, I could not attend in person, so I asked for his bib number so I could track him online, while my parents went to cheer him on. When I tried tracking him, his name was nowhere to be found. At first I assumed he was registered under the charity name, so instead I used Find My iPhone to follow his location and update my parents.

“My mother hates my wife”

I’m 26 and my wife is 21. We’ve been together almost 3 years and married for over a year. From the beginning, my mother never liked my wife. At first I thought maybe it was because she was young, but now she’s my wife and nothing has changed.
We recently moved and my mother came to visit our new house for the first time. My wife was exhausted but still cooked dinner and even baked my mother’s favorite cake. She was genuinely excited for the visit and smiling the whole time. But my mother barely acknowledged her. She only talked to me and never smiled back at my wife. During dinner, my mother even stopped eating once she realized my wife had cooked the food.
Your Life Changes the Moment You Stop Avoiding Hard Conversations

There’s a weird moment that happens right before an uncomfortable conversation.
Your chest tightens. Your brain starts manufacturing excuses at lightning speed.
This isn’t the right time.
Maybe I’m overreacting.
Maybe it’ll work itself out.
And then you don’t say the thing.

Why I Married a Man in Prison

If you’d asked me a few years ago if I could ever see myself marrying someone in prison, I would’ve said no way. But honestly, life has a way of throwing you curveballs, and sometimes you end up exactly where you never thought you’d be. I didn’t go looking for this. In fact, when it all started, I was actually with his brother. Yeah, it’s weird to say out loud, but his brother was the one who asked me to start writing to him. At first, I only agreed because I figured it would make someone’s day a little less lonely. I wasn’t searching for a soulmate, and I sure as hell wasn’t looking for a husband behind bars.
The Story of How a White Supremacist Nearly Became DC Comics’ First Black Solo Superhero

There are a lot of bad superhero ideas out there.
Like, A LOT a lot.
Comic books have been around forever, which means every possible idea has eventually gotten pitched by somebody who was either sleep deprived, coked up, trapped in a deadline panic, or all three simultaneously. There are superheroes whose powers involve eating matter. There are superheroes whose entire deal is “bee themed.” There are villains who use condiments as weapons. At one point, Superman fought a telepathic gorilla because apparently no one in the room had the courage to say, “Maybe not.”
But even within that long and glorious history of nonsense, Black Bomber stands alone.
“Am I wrong for wanting my friend’s location?”
![]()
My friends and I share locations with each other, and for me it’s something that makes me feel connected to the people I care about. A lot of my close friends share locations and it’s always just been normal in my friendships.
One of my closest friends was at first uncomfortable sharing her location with me when I asked. After a lot of conversations and convincing she eventually agreed to turn it on for me.
