How Do Intelligence Agencies Recruit Spies?

Most people imagine spy recruitment happening like it does in movies.
A mysterious man in a dark suit approaches someone in a bar in Vienna. A coded phrase gets exchanged. A briefcase changes hands. Suddenly someone is betraying their country for millions of dollars.
Real intelligence recruitment is usually slower, quieter, and far more psychological than that.

“My friend blocked me after I questioned her babies’ paternity”

A few years ago, my close childhood friend gave birth to triplets. Her husband is a light Black man. Two of the babies had the same skin tone as her husband, and the third was much darker. That made me suspicious that her husband might not be the father.

“My uncle is marrying a prostitute…”

My divorced uncle decided to start paying for companionship.
He flew to Thailand and met a prostitute with a child and began paying her for frequent sexual encounters. She does not speak English, but that is not an issue. He does not care what she thinks.
He pays both her and her parents hundreds of dollars a month for her love and devotion. He is also including her in his will. He is rich, which I am sure has nothing to do with anything. She loves him for him. Not a gold digger or anything. And he loves her for her. It is definitely real.
How to Raise a Child to Be Insecure

If you wanted to raise a child who grows up confident, emotionally stable, and capable of handling life, there are some pretty obvious things you’d probably do.
You’d encourage them. You’d let them fail sometimes. You’d listen when they talk. You’d make them feel safe without making them soft.
So naturally, if you want to raise a child to be deeply insecure, you do the opposite.

The 1998 TV Show That Turned Slavery Into a Sitcom

There are bad television ideas.
There are catastrophically bad television ideas.
And then there is The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer, which somehow looked at slavery-era America and thought:
“You know what this needs? Laugh track.”
Not metaphorical laugh-track energy.
An actual laugh track.
And the craziest part is not that the show existed.

“My boyfriend lied to me about running a marathon”

A few weeks ago, my boyfriend claimed he completed a full marathon in an impressive time, under four hours. Since we started dating six months ago, this marathon had been a huge topic between us. I watched him train, helped him fundraise, and supported him emotionally the entire way.
On race day, I could not attend in person, so I asked for his bib number so I could track him online, while my parents went to cheer him on. When I tried tracking him, his name was nowhere to be found. At first I assumed he was registered under the charity name, so instead I used Find My iPhone to follow his location and update my parents.

“My mother hates my wife”

I’m 26 and my wife is 21. We’ve been together almost 3 years and married for over a year. From the beginning, my mother never liked my wife. At first I thought maybe it was because she was young, but now she’s my wife and nothing has changed.
We recently moved and my mother came to visit our new house for the first time. My wife was exhausted but still cooked dinner and even baked my mother’s favorite cake. She was genuinely excited for the visit and smiling the whole time. But my mother barely acknowledged her. She only talked to me and never smiled back at my wife. During dinner, my mother even stopped eating once she realized my wife had cooked the food.
