When teachers gave us tests in elementary school, I genuinely didn’t understand the point. Why not just remember the textbook? Why not pull up the page in your head and read the answer?

My boyfriend and I have very different styles of arguing. I had a pretty traumatic childhood. My dad died, my mom and I don’t have much of a relationship, and I grew up around explosive fights where people said horrible things to each other and then acted like nothing happened.

One of the most frustrating things about studying history is discovering how familiar it feels.
